Is it okay to install sod in the late fall? The short answer is, yes. Installing sod in the late fall is perfectly fine because the rule of thumb is, ‘if we can harvest, you can still install sod.’ We harvest sod throughout the late fall and usually until ground freeze up in Manitoba. Benefits of late fall sod install: – Less intense heat: watering still has to be done, but evaporation is much less of an issue in the late fall because of the cooler temperatures. – Less heat stress: for the grass plants which helps avoid wilted grass or burnt sod on pallets. And for many people the cooler temperatures are easier to work in rather than blazing heat. Keep in mind the same preparation and sod install steps need to be followed. Soil & sod, especially on larger orders should never arrive on the same day. It’s very easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of work that has to be done and the sod sits waiting. All grading & topsoil prep should be be done before the sod arrives. We can help you plan your soil & sod installation to avoid problems. You will still need to water the sod after it is installed as weather conditions permit. It’s not too late to install sod in Manitoba. Give us a call and we can help you get your yard projects done before the winter sets in.
